While I was watching it, the first thing that popped in my mind was, “Wow, that sucks for her that she got that question.” I was rooting for her because she’s from CA and she’s way hotter than the other girl (I’m superficial like that — but I think that’s a requirement for enjoying the show), but now with all this talk about her representing us as a country, I understand why she shouldn’t be Miss USA. I don’t think Perez should have called her a b-tch, though. Anyway, good post! Very thought-provoking.

Well said, Amanda. And I suppose we should be thankful the stupidity coming out pageants these days is ideological stupidity, which is at least a step up from grammarical stupidity (I’m looking at you, Miss Teen South Carolina.)

Also, “Opposite marriage”? I kind of like that term, because I think it’s the first time I’ve heard heterosexuality framed as the negative of homosexuality. Not that it is, but linguistically it’s interesting…

I also kind of chuckled when I heard her say “opposite marriage”. I’m not a fan of pageants but I heard the clip of the whole thing on the radio yesterday. Pretty ridiculous.

Um, Miss USA contestants aren’t known for their brains. She’s a pretty face, and not very well spoken.

I looked at what she actually said, and to be honest, I don’t see what the fuss is about. So she’s a bigot. Many, many, many people are, including all of the millions of people who voted to outlaw gay marriage in California.

I’d rather know she was a bigot before she “represented” me at the ribbon cuttings and school assemblies she’ll attend than have her answer such a question.

I do have to say, at least she was honest.

By the way, I equate the question on gay marriage to the question on abortion. Usually the people who are against it attribute their opposition to their religious beliefs. That means it’s an issue that will not go to bed quietly. Ever.

I think you already know my stance on this issue as we hold pretty much the same political views, but my question is “How did I miss this entire thing?” I must have been wrapped up in Burn Notice, but man, that’s just not ok.

I totally agree with you on this. I think usually people make a fuss over nothing, but I think this issue is worth getting attention. But maybe its just cos she’s tall, blonde and skinny to which i get annoyed
